Zero Carbon Housing Baden (2020)

For the IDP 2020, the A/S teaching team collaborates with the Swiss architecture office JOM. Students will be working in teams of two on a realistic case study, provided by the architects. The project features a multi-story residential building, which pioneers CO2 neutral architecture in view of the upcoming Swiss Energy Strategy 2050. The building aims to provide living spaces for 43 households. The focus of the project is to build a CO2 neutral building, which affects the choice of energy supply systems as well as the materials being used for the construction.

Students are asked first to analyze the status quo, climate and potentials of the area. This includes climate analysis, topography and context, resources and renewables potential of the proximate site context. This allows the students to get a comprehensive overview of the study area’s problems, constraints and potentials. Following this analysis, the student groups will work on developing a number of integrated design scenarios. Finally, the students will focus on a strategy/number of strategies to develop in further detail.

The final goal of this course is for students to develop synergies and designs that focus on enhancing the energy performance, minimizing CO2 emissions and fostering sustainability of a residential building in Baden.
